Billboards roasting famous people's unfinished business
What's the play
You build a loud out-of-home campaign around famous people with very public unfinished business, then nudge them to go hire the help on your platform. Big type, bright color, and a joke simple enough to land in the two seconds a commuter looks up.
What was the alternative?
A polite launch billboard that explains what the platform is and lists a few reasons to sign up.
Results / what moved
40%
lift in registrations
Upwork pulled a 40% lift in registrations and a real bump in brand awareness across all their major markets.
Steps
- 1
Find the unfinished business
You scan for famous people or moments with obvious, very public loose ends your product could fix.
- 2
Write the callout
You write short, cheeky headlines that name the situation and point straight to your platform as the fix.
- 3
Make it un-ignorable
You lock a bright, distinctive visual style that survives a two-second glance on a busy commute.
- 4
Go big outdoors
You buy high-traffic out-of-home placements across your major markets, since this is your awareness swing.
- 5
Land the punchline on the product
You keep the jump from joke to 'hire the help here' instant, so nobody has to think about it.
- 6
Track the lift
You measure registrations and brand awareness before and after, market by market.
Notes
Tying your brand to famous people's loose ends is a tone tightrope, so keep it playful and never mean. The joke only works if the cultural reference is fresh enough that people get it at a glance, which means you're writing against a clock. And out-of-home is a brand bet, so don't expect clean attribution on that registration lift. Plenty of other things move at the same time.
